Exciting Update: Garmin Chat Connector Now Tracks Your Gear!
Chat with Your Gear: Unlock Mileage, History, and Insights from Garmin Connect Without Leaving Your AI Assistant
If you’ve been following my adventures in blending AI with fitness tech, you know I’m all about making our health data more accessible and conversational. Back in my original post, I introduced the Garmin Chat Connector—a cloud-hosted tool that lets you chat with your Garmin Connect data from any AI app on desktop or mobile. It’s been a game-changer for querying everything from sleep stats to VO2 Max without digging through apps.
Today, I’m thrilled to announce a major new feature: full support for Garmin Gear tracking! That’s right—now you can ask your AI assistant about the mileage on your running shoes, the status of your bikes, and more, all pulled straight from Garmin Connect. No more manually checking the app; just natural language queries to keep tabs on your equipment’s lifespan.
What’s New with Gear Tracking?
Garmin Connect has long allowed users to log and track gear like shoes, bikes, and other equipment, assigning activities to them to accumulate miles or usage. With this update to the Garmin Chat Connector, you can now access that data conversationally. Here’s a quick rundown:
Active Gear Overview: Ask “What gear am I tracking?” and get a list of your current active shoes and bikes, complete with models and start dates. For example, it might show your Altra FWD VIA Road shoes started on February 14, 2026, or your Vilano TUONO T20 bike from September 23, 2022.
Mileage and Stats: Dive into specifics with questions like “How many miles do I have on my shoes?” You’ll get breakdowns, such as 76.4 miles on one pair across 36 activities, or 6.4 miles on another. It even includes UUIDs for precise tracking if you’re into the nitty-gritty.
Historical Insights: The connector can pull stats on retired gear too—I’ve got over 30 pairs of shoes going back to 2016, mostly from Altra’s Paradigm, Escalante, Torin, and Provision lines. It’s perfect for spotting patterns in your gear preferences.
This feature taps into Garmin’s API to fetch real-time data, so it’s always up-to-date with your latest runs, rides, or workouts. Whether you’re monitoring wear on your favorite running kicks (I aim for a 400-mile max per pair) or checking bike maintenance needs, it’s all at your fingertips—or rather, in your chat window.
Why This Matters
As runners and cyclists, we know gear doesn’t last forever. Overused shoes can lead to injuries, and neglected bikes might need tune-ups. By integrating gear tracking into the Garmin Chat Connector, you get proactive insights without interrupting your flow. Imagine chatting with Claude or ChatGPT mid-training plan: “Is it time to retire my Escalantes?” Boom—instant answer based on your actual usage.
This builds on the existing 16 data tools across categories like Daily Overview, Recovery & Wellness, Training Performance, Nutrition & Hydration, and Body Metrics. Now, gear tracking adds another layer, making the connector an even more comprehensive hub for your Garmin ecosystem.
How to Get Started
If you’re new to the Garmin Chat Connector, head over to the setup page. Enter your Garmin Connect credentials (it’s secure—only encrypted tokens are stored), and you’ll get a personal MCP URL to plug into your AI app of choice:
Claude: Go to Settings → Connectors and add the URL.
ChatGPT: Enable beta features in Settings → Tools, then add it.
Once set up, just start asking gear-related questions. Existing users? The update is live now—no need to reconfigure; it rolls out automatically.
A quick note: This is still an independent project (no official Garmin affiliation), and while it’s free for now, I appreciate any feedback or support via Substack subscriptions. If you run into issues or have feature requests, drop a comment below or hit me up on X at @rodtrent.
What gear questions are you excited to ask? Let’s chat about it in the comments. Stay fit, folks!
