President Biden was blasted recently for a declaration he made during a speech. He said, “I am AI.” The moment went viral and of course, for all the wrong reasons, despite NVIDIA using the phrase as a marketing tool earlier this year.
Despite being a palindrome (a phrase that reads the same backwards and forwards), what he said is actually pretty brilliant and may stand the test of time as the most intelligent thing he’s uttered in recent memory.
He may not have even understood what he said, or meant it in the way I took it, but to me it’s a simple way to describe to people what AI actually is. For better or worse, and the actual reasons can be argued, the human population is more fearful these days than prior to Covid. People seem to continue waiting for the next shoe to drop. So, with so many unknowns and so many Sci-Fi movies depicting an AI that wants to conquer and control, it makes sense that this latest hotness - Generative AI - is the next best thing for people to fear.
During a recent talk, I began my session by reading a few text messages from family members. One thread I read, ended with the question: “Isn’t AI Satanic?”
I apologize to those family members, as I didn’t even ask first. But - sorry - I WILL do it again. :)
If you are like me and are constantly bombarded with questions like “Will AI destroy humanity?” or “Is AI just mind control?” this simple phrase - I am AI - should be a godsend to get the conversation started.
AI is literally powered by us. Without us, without training the models, without supplying and protecting the data, without developing the tools, AI will not exist. If AI is biased, deflects, hallucinates, or misleads, it’s because of us. We all need to take responsibility for what AI will be. From researchers to developers to security engineers, AI will be what we make it.
And, on the other side, for the consumers of AI, they need to take responsibility to hold those in control (including lawmakers) of AI to account. If AI is Satanic - it’s because we allowed that to happen.
WE ARE ALL AI
