Navigating the Transition to Overage SCUs in Microsoft Security Copilot
Embracing Overage SCUs for Seamless Security Management
Microsoft Security Copilot is introducing a new feature that allows owners and admins to enable overage SCUs, providing a flexible solution for managing workload capacity. Here's what you need to know about this transition and how it can benefit your organization.
Understanding Overage SCUs
Overage SCUs are designed to accommodate unexpected spikes in Security Copilot usage, ensuring your workloads run seamlessly even if you exceed your provisioned SCUs. This feature allows you to set an optional limit on overage SCUs for improved billing predictability. Overage SCUs are priced per hour at $6 per overage SCU for all currently available geographies, and you will only pay for the overage SCUs you use over your provisioned amount.
Provisioned SCUs vs. Overage SCUs
Provisioned SCUs are intended for regular, expected workloads and continue to be priced per hour at $4 per provisioned SCU for all currently available geographies. The addition of overage pricing ensures that your workloads will not be throttled when you exceed your provisioned SCUs, providing a safety net for unexpected usage spikes.
Recommended Actions
To ensure a smooth transition, organizations have two options:
Do nothing: If overage isn't enabled by May 31, 2025, you will have access to your provisioned SCU capacity only, and workloads will throttle when you exceed your provisioned allocation.
Opt in any time: Once overage is enabled, you can adjust your provisioned allocation or set an optional overage limit. Your workloads will be throttled if your SCU capacity limit (provisioned + overage up to your optional selected overage limit) is reached. You can disable overage at any time, but exceeding your provisioned SCU allocation will result in throttling.
Preparing for the Transition
To prepare for this change, owners and admins should review their past usage in the dashboard and decide whether to adjust provisioned SCUs or opt in to overage and set an optional limit on overage SCUs. Use the in-product dashboard to track usage and set an optional limit on overage SCUs for improved billing predictability. This proactive approach will help ensure a smooth transition and prevent any disruptions to your workloads.
TLDR
The introduction of overage SCUs in Microsoft Security Copilot provides organizations with a flexible solution for managing unexpected spikes in usage. By understanding the differences between provisioned and overage SCUs and taking the recommended actions, you can ensure your workloads run seamlessly and avoid throttling. Embrace this change and prepare your team for a smooth transition to overage SCUs.
