Seeking the Food That Endures: A Reflection on John 6:27
Shifting Our Hunger from the Temporary to the Eternal
“Do not work for food that spoils, but for food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you. For on him God the Father has placed his seal of approval.” (John 6:27, NIV)
In a world that often feels like a race to accumulate more—more money, more possessions, more status - Jesus’ words in John 6:27 cut through the noise with piercing clarity. He calls us to shift our focus from the temporary to the eternal, from what fades to what lasts forever.
This verse comes just after Jesus miraculously fed the 5,000, a crowd that followed Him not necessarily because they sought spiritual truth, but because their physical hunger had been satisfied. They wanted more of the bread that filled their stomachs, but Jesus redirects their desires to something far greater: the “food that endures to eternal life.”
What is this food? It’s not something we can earn through our own efforts or achievements. It’s a gift, freely given by the Son of Man, Jesus Himself, who bears the Father’s seal of approval. This food is the life-giving relationship with Christ, the Bread of Life, who satisfies the deepest hunger of our souls. It’s His grace, His truth, His presence—sustaining us not just for today, but for eternity.
How often do we, like the crowd, chase after things that spoil? We pour our energy into temporary pursuits—careers that define us, possessions that break, or approval that fades. While these things aren’t inherently wrong, Jesus reminds us they’re not the ultimate goal. They won’t last. But the life He offers, rooted in His love and secured by His sacrifice, will never perish.
Today, let’s pause and reflect: Where are we investing our time and energy? Are we seeking the temporary “food” of this world, or are we pursuing the eternal nourishment found in Christ? Here are a few ways to realign our hearts with Jesus’ invitation:
Spend Time in God’s Word: The Bible is spiritual food that strengthens us for the journey. Even a few minutes meditating on a verse can reorient our priorities toward eternity.
Pray for Discernment: Ask God to reveal where you’re chasing what spoils and to help you seek His kingdom first (Matthew 6:33).
Rest in His Gift: Notice Jesus says this eternal food is something He will give you. You don’t have to strive or prove yourself worthy. Trust in His grace and receive it with gratitude.
As we go about our day, let’s fix our eyes on the One who carries the Father’s seal of approval, the One who offers us life that never fades. May we work not for what is fleeting, but for the eternal treasure found in Him.
Let’s carry this truth into our week: The food that endures is found in Christ alone.
