However, generative AI also poses many challenges and risks, such as ethical, legal, and social implications, as well as technical limitations and vulnerabilities. Therefore, it is crucial to keep a human in the loop when using generative AI, and to use AI as a tool to augment, not replace, human capabilities and responsibilities.
What is Human in the Loop?
Human in the Loop (HITL) is a design strategy that involves human expertise and intervention at various stages of an AI system’s operation. In context of generative AI, this means incorporating human oversight and feedback during the model’s training, evaluation, and output generation processes.
For example, during the training phase, human experts can provide high-quality and diverse data, as well as labels, annotations, and rules, to guide the learning and optimization of the generative model. During the evaluation phase, human experts can assess the performance and quality of the generative model, as well as its potential impact and implications, using various metrics and criteria. During the output generation phase, human experts can review, edit, approve, or reject the outputs of the generative model, as well as provide explanations and justifications for their decisions.
Why is Human in the Loop Important?
Keeping a human in the loop for generative AI is important for several reasons, such as:
Ensuring accuracy and reliability: Generative AI models can produce inaccurate, incomplete, or inconsistent outputs, due to data quality issues, model errors, or adversarial attacks. Human experts can detect and correct these errors, and ensure that the outputs are valid, relevant, and coherent.

Why is AI Used to Augment, Not Replace?
Using AI to augment, not replace, human capabilities and responsibilities is a key principle of responsible and human-centered AI. This means that AI should be used as a tool to assist, support, and empower human users, not as a substitute to replace, automate, or undermine human users. This is especially relevant for generative AI, which can have significant influence and impact on human perception, cognition, and behavior.
